Amritsar-Lahore Bicycle Link

Amritsar-Lahore Bicycle Link

24 May, 2017

In pre- partition Punjab students of Khalsa College, Amritsar often cycled down to Lahore, a distance of 64 kms,  for a  hockey match against Government College, Lahore.

Common people also preferred commuting between Amritsar and Lahore by cycle, though the two cities were well connected by rail and bus services.
The love of cycling in pre- partition Punjab gave rise to a flourishing cycle business in Lahore, the most prominent being the Munjal family who later migrated to Ludhiana to establish the iconic Hero cycle and two- wheeler auto brand.

Lahore also had a Lahore Bicycle Club, which still exists.

As part of 70 PARTITION celebration events, SARHAD proposes to facilitate ASR-LAHORE BICYCLE PEACE RALLY, starting August 14, 2017

with the first inaugural bicycle peace rally from Lahore to Amritsar on August 14, 2017 and a return bicycle peace rally from Amritsar to Lahore on August 15, 2017.

A homogeneous group of 15 persons — students of a college or univ, group of senior citizens, farmers, teachers etc– will cycle from Amritsar to Lahore or Lahore to Amritsar and return after stay of two nights.

The mission of the cycle trip is to promote the message of peace through  person to person contacts, particularly focussing on youth.
